Join The Phoenix Singers
Singers with relevant small choir experience who would be stimulated by our range of repertoire are warmly invited to introduce themselves to our Director of Music, Andrew Maddocks: tel 01823 252658, email a.maddocks@mac.com.
We normally undertake about five concerts a year - plus other engagements by invitation.
For each concert a schedule of dates for rehearsal is drawn up in advance: an initial rehearsal, followed some weeks later by about five weekly rehearsals leading to the concert date itself.
The interval between the first and the series of weekly rehearsals is for each individual singer to become familiar with the notes of the works to be performed. CDs are made available. Rehearsals take place at Taunton School, on Tuesdays 7.45 – 9.30pm.
The Phoenix Singers are formally a charitable trust. This is reflected by our choral scholarships and young membership schemes. A number of our singers each year are students whose membership of the Phoenix Singers makes a major contribution to their personal musical and choral development. We see to it that they are made very welcome – not least at our social occasions.
The Choral Scholarships and Young Singers Membership
Up to four Choral Scholarships are offered each year, with an award of £75 per academic term for a maximum of two years. These bursaries are open to singers between the ages of 16 and 25 who are in full time education AND/OR are receiving regular singing tuition, privately or at an institution.
The Scholarships are awarded on the verbal recommendation of the institution or private teacher, and an informal audition. A minimum of 75% rehearsal attendance is required.
In addition to the Choral Scholarships, The Phoenix Singers offers a Young Singers Membership to persons between the ages of 16 and 25 – with a preferential membership subscription - currently £10 per term instead of the normal £25.
Applicants need not be receiving formal music tuition but must have the necessary vocal and reading abilities to be a full member of The Phoenix Singers.
